A young woman wanders the wilderness with her telescope, unveiling the universe through
astrophotography as she discovers a deeper connection to the stars and to love, reflecting on
her place in the cosmos through poetic thought.
Esther's Interstellar Vision was designed as an intimate, atmospheric exploration of solitude, wonder, and connection. I wanted the visual language to feel grounded in authentic astrophotography, using darkness, red light, natural environments, and celestial imagery to place the audience inside Esther's nighttime experience. The contrast between the quiet human moments and the vastness of space reflects the film's central idea: that even in moments of solitude, we can still feel connected to something much larger than ourselves.
A central part of my directing approach was creating a sense of wonder through astronomical imagery grounded in real astronomical data. The film incorporates data from sources including the Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based telescope observations, combined with image processing, 3D animation, and visual effects.
Astrophotographer and visual artist Jonathan Lodge collaborated on the astronomical imagery, using tools including Blender and DaVinci Resolve to process, develop, animate, and render the sequences. The goal was to create cinematic movement through space while maintaining a connection to real astronomical subjects and observations.

A night sequence shaped by red light, capturing isolation and stillness in the dark.

A quiet moment of observation, where the human eye meets the vastness of space.

A visual study of contrast, where light reveals what darkness tries to hide.

Cartwheel Galaxy (ESO 350-40)

Pac-Man Nebula-NGC 281

A sense of weightlessness, inspired by the stillness of space.

A quiet moment under the night sky, connecting with the vastness above.

Together under a sky that feels endless.
